Mrs. Bonnar Primary Music

Welcome to Music at Patterson Primary!  My name is Amy Bonnar.  I have a degree in Music Education from Westminster College, Level 3 certification in Orff-Schulwerk from the University of St. Thomas, and am currently finishing my master's degree in special education at Robert Morris University.  Although I have been teaching music to young children for many, many years this is my first year at Blackhawk. It is my privilege to see all Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade classes every 4 school days to make music and learn together.

About Primary Music

All students at Blackhawk Primary Schools receive 40 minutes of General Music instruction once every four days. Learning is experiential and includes active participation in music through singing, moving, playing instruments, and listening. Principles and practices of the Kodaly, Dalcroze, and Orff-Schulwerk methods of music learning are used. Cross-curricular connections are made to other content areas through the use of art, technology, and children’s literature. At this level students are learning to identify and use the building blocks of music. Experiences at the Primary level will prepare the students for further study of music in the district and beyond. Most importantly music encourages community and cooperation providing an environment in which students can grow and learn together.

Kindergarten Music
In Kindergarten music we are active, engaged, and excited!  We sing, play instruments, listen to music, and move - a lot! Through these activities we are learning to use our bodies to make music.  We practice moving our voices, holding and handling instruments, and moving in place or all around the room. Through these activities we are also learning how to talk about music. We compare loud/soft, long/short, high/low, and fast/slow sounds.  The most important skill we learn in Kindergarten music is how to work together.  When we all do our part we make beautiful music together!
1st Grade Music
In 1st grade music we begin to name the building blocks of music in order to enjoy the music of others and create our own.   Listening, moving, and actively participating making in music help us understand musical concepts.  We keep a steady beat and perform rhythms with our voices, instruments, and bodies.  We begin to label symbols used for music notation.  We can identify the tempo of music from fast to slow.  We identify and use varying dynamics.  We can determine if sounds are higher, lower, or staying the same.  We use all of these skills when we improvise and compose our own music. We are all a part of music and music is a part of us!
2nd Grade Music
 In 2nd grade music we are sharpening our musical skills and learning specific information that will prepare us to progress as musicians.  We use our singing voices, instruments, and movement to perform different things at the same time!  We know and use the names of rhythms and pitches, dynamics, tempi, and other musical symbols.  We can write or improvise our own music using our knowledge.  We are proficient at naming our classroom instruments and playing them correctly. We recognize and name orchestra families and individual instruments. We enjoy both creative and sequenced movement. We take pride in understanding and creating music that is increasingly complex.
