Hello - Welcome to the Primary School Counseling Program.

The Northwestern Primary School Counseling program is there to help students and parents when they have problems or concerns that distract from the student's learning in class.  Mr. Abel is the School Counselor, and has been at Northwestern for 22 years.  That experience helps Mr. Abel when he is running groups dealing with self-esteem, divorce, good choices or anger management, meeting with students 1 on 1, or in classroom lessons.  If you have any questions about the School Counseling program, please contact Mr. Abel

The Blackhawk Elementary Schools are celebrating Red Ribbon Week (Drug Awareness Week) next week, October 22 to October 26, 2018.  During this week children will be involved in activities to develop healthy lifestyle choices.  The activities and lessons are planned and presented based on the growth and development of primary age children.  When students learn about healthy lifestyles early in childhood, before most are faced with independent choices, it significantly increases the likelihood that they will make good choices later regarding the use of tobacco, alcohol, or drugs.

To build enthusiasm for Red Ribbon Week, we have a special week of events at Patterson Primary, and Blackhawk Intermediate School Kindergarten through 4th:

=       Monday, October 22 will be “Crazy Socks” Day.  Put on some crazy socks and have fun!

=       Tuesday, October 23 is “Wear Red Day”, as we wear Red to say no to drugs.

=       Wednesday, October 24 is “Wacky Wednesday” – Wear your clothes inside out, or totally wear a mismatched outfit, to show how silly it is to do drugs.

=       Thursday, October 25 Is “Crazy Hat/Cap Day”.  Wear your favorite or crazy hat to school.

=       Friday, October 26 – “Wear Pink Day” – Join the district in wearing pink for cancer awareness!

I will be conducting lessons this week in 1stand 2ndgrade on the dangers of tobacco and electronic cigarettes. I conduct kindergarten lessons regarding candy/drug look alikes.  Children are taught that some candy and drugs often look alike.  Students learn to check with an adult if they are not sure of ‘candy’ they have from the kitchen counter to their Halloween bag. 3rdand 4thgrade will learn reminders on how to say “No” if someone asks them to try drugs, alcohol or tobacco.

We cannot protect our children from facing many of the problems of growing up in today’s society, but we can prepare them to make good choices if confronted with these situations.  Your interest, support and caring interaction will assist your child in arriving at a healthy lifestyle.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the school.
