Roadmap: Grades 5-8th

Will we be able to be in the school buildings in the fall?

We hope to be able to have students in the building in the fall. However, we are prepared with multiple Pathways for student learning in the event we need to socially distance students and staff. We have models of in person learning, virtual learning, and hybrid models where students are on campus a portion of their time and working from home a portion of their time. Please read our Road to Reopening document here.

Can my child participate in the Blackhawk Online Academy ?

It has always been our goal to meet the educational needs of all of our students. It may be the best option for some families for their children to attend school virtually all year; this is an option for all students via the Blackhawk Online Academy. Students may work at home on all of their courses or we can tailor the education to meet your child's needs. For example some students may take certain classes virtually via the Blackhawk Online Academy while taking other classes in the building. Click here to learn more about the Blackhawk Online Academy. Our cyber students in Grades 5-12 use the Edgenuity platform where courses are also customized to align with Blackhawk’s curriculum to make online learning engaging, rigorous, and relevant. The Blackhawk Online Academy provides asynchronous instruction where students can participate in the learning at the time of day that best meets their needs. In the traditional Blackhawk Online Academy, students access videos and materials at their own pace and Blackhawk teachers monitor and grade the Edgenuity activities.

How will the data from the parent survey be utilized?

We have all learned much about our students, ourselves as educators, and our instructional practices in the virtual setting. We will utilize the information from our parent survey in addition to our professional conversations about what students need in a virtual learning environment to create robust experiences for students. Teachers and administrators are collaborating to increase the “live” virtual opportunities for student learning.

When will families know exactly what the fall will look like?

We will communicate all plans for 2020-2021 as they continue to develop. All decisions will be made based on guidance from CDC, the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), the PA Department of Health, and state/federal governments.

How will we ascertain what student learning needs are or will be in 2020-2021?

Teachers are collaborating with grade levels above and below to ensure we are meeting individual needs of students and preparing for any knowledge gaps they may have. We will actively develop learning plans to meet any needs or gaps.

What is the protocol for items being dropped off at the school during the day?

If you need to drop an item off for your child, we will have a "no contact" protocol where the item can be left in our captured entrance. If you would like to speak with a staff member, please make an advanced appointment. Unannounced visitors will not be permitted into the building.

What will the protocols be for picking up or dropping off my child at the school?

Pick Up: We are working on "no contact" pick up protocols that may include: using the intercom system to identify yourself, showing identification through the window, and waiting outside for your child. We are also looking into a QR code system where you can scan a school created QR code for your child through the window to pick him/her up. If your child is coming from the Health Office and/or needs assistance, we will walk your child out to you.  Once completed, these protocols will be shared with families.

Drop Off: Students will be buzzed into the building. Parents will need to remain outside.

What will the classrooms look like?

Non-essential items will be removed to allow for the spacing of desks.  Shared items will be limited and individual items will be used whenever feasible.  Cloth items (carpets, chairs etc) will be removed from the classrooms to facilitate cleaning.
