Two incidents requiring immediate response occurred in the last 24 hours in the Blackhawk School District that required the School District to work collaboratively with Chippewa and Darlington Police.Last night local law enforcement was alerted that an HMS student may have made comments about self-injury, harming others, or harming the school. The Chippewa Police were instrumental in moving quickly to investigate this incident last night. Any potential threat was immediately addressed and actions were taken. After the investigation, the child is receiving necessary supports and services. Highland students were safe to return today thanks to the swift response last evening from the Chippewa Police. Today we spoke to the 7th and 8th grade classes to discuss the importance of telling an adult if they have a concern about another student’s welfare or comments another student may have made. We also talked about reporting truth to adults versus spreading rumors to other students. We made this a learning opportunity to remind the students about Safe2Say and the Blackhawk Tipline. We thank the students who had a concern and shared this concern with a trusted adult. This morning, a 911 call was placed that an elementary student brought a gun to a bus stop. Chippewa and Darlington Police began an investigation. The Darlington Police determined quickly that it was a BB gun, and it was at the bus stop. The student will receive appropriate disciplinary action, and we are thankful to the concerned citizen who notified the police. This incident is a reminder that according to school code, students are not permitted to possess any type of weapon from the time they leave their house in the morning until they return to their house after school. These regulations apply to all students regardless of their age. We are again thankful to all students, families, staff members, and community members who report concerns to the police department and/or the school district to ensure our students and staff are safe.
