Today at noon, we received test results regarding the air quality and questionable substance, now known to be mold, at Highland Middle School. The air quality company tested various locations including the kitchen and cafeteria. As stated in Sunday‚Äôs message, we made a conservative decision to close the Highland Building on Monday until we had the test results.

The air sample results are at a safe level. The air quality is within EPA Guidelines, which means the air quality inside Highland Middle School is as good as or equal to the quality of the outside air. For the test results of the swabs, there are five categories to rate the amount of mold activity: Rare, Few, Moderate, Many, and Numerous. All tests show that the mold activity at HMS is in the Rare category; which means that it is the least amount. There was visible mold growth in the areas tested, but we have caught it early. Although the mold activity level is in the Rare category, we still need to remediate those areas. We commend the employees in the cafeteria who noticed this and reported it. As soon as a report summary of the tests becomes available from the company, we will post it online.

The district has contracted with the air quality company to ensure that remediation in the cafeteria will be completed by Monday night. They will continue to work at Highland throughout the evenings and after school hours to complete the remediation in the kitchen area. In every effort to be proactive, a certified company is also cleaning the ventilation system, even though the air quality is at a very safe level. It is the expert opinion of the air quality company that it is safe for students and staff to be in the building throughout the remediation process.

Based upon the recommendations of the air quality company, Highland Middle School will be open tomorrow, Tuesday, September 11. If you would like to keep your child home until all remediation is finished, that is your decision. Please contact Amy Anderson at 724-843-1700 or We will ask you to provide a letter to excuse your child for these days. Your child will be responsible to make up all missed work. We will continue to update families via phone, SKYALERTS, the website, and Facebook.

A questionable substance was discovered by staff at Highland Middle School this week in the kitchen. In the interest of health, safety, and welfare for the students and staff, we wanted to check the air quality. Therefore, we had an air quality study done by a certified company in the kitchen area. While waiting for the results, we consulted with a professional biohazard cleanup company. During the consultation, the company found the substance in other locations in the cafeteria. Consequently, Highland reached out to a certified air quality remediation company to inspect the entire building. We met on Sunday with the certified air quality remediation company to assess the situation.

We will take every precaution to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff. Therefore we will be cancelling school on Monday, September 10, 2018, for Highland Middle School students only, pending further results. Based upon further investigation between Sunday evening and Monday night, we may be able to restart school as early as Tuesday while we contain and remediate that area. This would only be considered based on the recommendations of the professionals.  If the air quality concern is found to be more systemic, we may need to close Highland Middle School for a longer period of time until the remediation is complete. If this should occur, a plan will be devised so that students can attend school.

We understand that this will impact all Highland families and we apologize for any inconvenience. It is our hope that this will be contained to a day or two. However, we would never knowingly put students in an unsafe environment. Until we are certain that the air quality is appropriate for students and staff, we will cancel school on Monday and all activities that would occur in the Highland Building. This includes meetings, athletics, and after school events that require use of the Highland Building. Please look for information from your coach to see if your games/practices will be rescheduled in another location. Please continue to check our website, look for SKYALERTS, and check your phone messages for further communication.

Please be patient with us as we work to ensure the building is ready for staff and students to resume normal school hours. We will not rush the timeline. If available, additional information will be presented at the School Board Meeting. All other district buildings will remain open.
