Reading, English, Spelling

Reading- We will continue to use the Storytown reading book for the first nine weeks. As the students work on their comprehension skills, they will also be enriching their robust vocabulary, and strengthening their reading skills. We will be focusing on theme, sequence, compare and contrast, and cause and effect. Discussion about what “GOOD READERS” do is also a buzz in our classroom. Skills such as how to interact with the text are discussed, modeled, and then practiced. In reading class the students will also participate in Daily 5 which is a rotation of Listen to Read, Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Word Work, and small groups. During the small groups, I will be focusing on individual student abilities addressing the students' strengths and weaknesses. This is very beneficial for all students because the small groups are individualized.

Thinkcentral.com is an excellent way for your child to prepare for the reading tests. Most reading tests include story comprehension, vocabulary, and reading skills. The test also includes a text-dependent writing prompt. The students are encouraged to use the ACE writing graphic organizer to complete the prompt. A- Answer the task. C- Cite evidence. The students are to have sentence starters, evidence from the story, and explain why/how it relates to the prompt. E- End with a conclusive statement.

English-In English we will be focusing on grammar, conventions, and writing.  Adjectives, adverbs, and commas are some of the topics that we will be discussing in class. The students will also be using the writing process to produce a opinion writing piece.

Spelling- The students will be introduced to the spelling words at the beginning of the week and tested on Friday.
