About HMS

Blackhawk Highland Middle School lives our mission - To empower all students to achieve their best every day in preparation for tomorrow. Our staff collaborate both as grade level, and content teams to strategize and support individual student needs. Through academic growth, social-emotional development, and character education, our students in grades 5 through 8 experience an enriching transition from primary to secondary level.

We take great pride in the accomplishments of our students and offer abundant opportunities both in and outside the classroom. Throughout the year, Highland students and staff participate in a variety of service projects that benefit organizations such as the Salvation Army and the American Cancer Society—building empathy, civic responsibility, and community spirit. In addition, all students engage in the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, which fosters a culture of respect, responsibility, and integrity. Students and staff also have opportunities for learning outside of the classroom through our culminating experience of Camp KOK in 5th grade and a trip to Washington D.C. in their 8th grade year.

We believe that a strong partnership between home and school is essential to student success. Highland encourages parents and guardians to stay actively involved, maintain open communication with teachers, and participate in school events. Families are always welcome to reach out with questions or concerns.

This aligns Highland Middle School with the Blackhawk School District vision – To be a model of excellence in a global community where our students thrive, our educators inspire, and our community grows stronger together.

Principal's Message

Greeting Blackhawk  Community,

My name is Rob Puskas and I am #blackhawkproud to be the principal of Highland Middle School.

At HMS, we believe in the importance of a school community. As someone who has had the privilege of raising a family, teaching, and serving as an administrator within this district, I’ve seen firsthand the strength and heart that define Blackhawk Pride. Personally, I have seen our children together on the field, in the stands, performing, competing, even in the stream catching fish. I also have the added privilege of watching their growth within the classrooms and the halls of our schools. So much of what we do is connected. From top to bottom when it comes to school community, each and every day, the best part of us is us!

There’s something truly special about walking through our halls each day and seeing students who are excited to be here. We strive for HMS to be a place where kids feel safe, supported, and inspired to grow. Not just academically, but as hard working, kind, and positive maturing young people. That’s a testament to the incredible partnership between our families, staff, and community.

At the end of each day, I am honored to serve as administrator to our students and I am happy and honored to be part of the Blackhawk community.

#blackhawkproud
