Cougar Pride Band goes to DISNEY WORLD!
The Blackhawk Cougar Pride Band traveled to Florida this past week, as is customary every three years. In addition to enjoying time in Walt Disney World and at Cocoa Beach, the band represented Blackhawk with pride on the world's stage as they marched through Epcot on Thursday morning. The guard was treated to an invigorating clinic for dance, flag, sabre, and rifle work that was topped with a special visit from Goofy! The instrumentalists attended the "You're Instrumental" Workshop, where they worked on their performance skills with Disney Clinician and famed composer/arranger Allen Gray. The band learned a little Disney magic, and recorded the soundtrack to Tarzan, synchronized with scenes from the movie, as well as "The Imperial March" from Star Wars with special voice over and sound effects by their directors. Can't wait to go again in the 2020/2021 school year!

Text Option Added to Blackhawk Tip Line --
You may now text to the anonymous Blackhawk tip hot line.  Send to:
Blackhawk Launches Anonymous Tip Line
In an ongoing effort to promote a safe learning environment, the district is providing the community with an anonymous tip line phone number. The purpose of the tip line is to allow the community the ability to share information anonymously regarding issues that may put others’ safety in danger.  Community members can report information about drugs, weapons, alcohol, violence or any threat to safety.  While this can be done anonymously, the more information given (including one’s name), the greater the ability the district has to do a complete investigation and resolve the situation quickly.

Please remember that this tip line DOES NOT replace 911 in cases of emergencies.  It shouldn't be used in emergency situations where immediate action is needed.  The tip line is a non-emergency information-gathering tool used as another means to keep our schools safe.  The tip line number is, 724-506-1811, and is posted on each school’s website, as well as the district page at

Blackhawk School District believes the social media situation involving threats has been mitigated. This incident has been completely investigated by law enforcement, mental health professionals, and the school administration. All students who were involved are in custody.

In an effort to alleviate any concerns, students will be entering in one area in each building during the a.m. arrival time and bookbags are subject to search. At the High School Building, all students will enter through the Flag Pole Doors. At all other buildings, the student entry procedures will remain the same as they have been. In addition, there will be a police presence in all buildings throughout the week. We will continue to work with local law enforcement, our crisis teams, and our staff to evaluate our crisis procedures. There will be meetings on Tuesday at the high school and middle school with the student body to discuss the severity of the situation and the leadership of the community members, staff, parents, and students who reported the social media posts. At the Elementary Buildings, we will hold developmentally appropriate safety conversations with students as needed.

Thanks to the cooperation of local police, state police, and the community, it is believed that all threats have been addressed. Therefore, at this time evening activities will continue as planned. Should parents choose not to have their child participate in this evening’s activities, please notify the appropriate personnel. All absences from today’s activities will be excused.

Managing Grief and Loss

It is very challenging for us all to face the passing of a young person. Any reaction to the death of a peer is normal and your child’s reaction may range from withdrawal to crying or anger. Your child may also ask questions about loss. We have provided resources below that may be helpful for you as you discuss grief.  Please also consider monitoring and discussing your child’s communication (social media, phone, email, text messaging) to help assess their needs. If you feel your child needs support, please contact his or her school’s Guidance Counselor. The Caring Place is also a valuable resource for grief and loss. Their website is:

Handout 1: Addressing Grief

Handout 2: Helping Children Cope

Handout 3: List of Books for Elementary Age Children on Grief
SNACK POLICY for all schools strictly enforced. PLEASE READ!
September 8, 2017

Dear Blackhawk School District Families,

In an effort to protect our students, many of whom have food allergies, we are asking that all snacks brought in for distribution to the students be pre-packaged store bought items. We are also asking that you provide the original packaging, including ingredient list to your classroom teachers. This way, the teachers can address any allergies that are in the classroom and see to it that students with allergies do not receive items that may cause an allergic reaction.

This includes any snacks that are served during the classroom parties as well. All snacks, both those served during the party or sent home must be pre-packaged store bought items.

Also, we ask that no preparation of food items be done as part of the classroom parties. Again, this is an effort to keep all students safe and protected from any possibly food contamination issues or allergic reactions.

Again, this is an effort to keep our children safe. Any questions may be directed to me at (724)846-6600 x1016 or

Cherie Fleischman
Food Service Director
