Decisions Regarding School Delays
Decisions regarding school delays are based on the conditions for that day.  These decisions are made in consultation with McCarter, Penn Dot and other government agencies that may or may not provide information at the time.

For example, today, January 8, 2018, the inclement weather did not begin until approximately 6:00 AM with rain.  In consultation with McCarter, it was decided that road conditions were more favorable early than they would be 2 hours later.  The decision was made to operate on a regular schedule.  We will continue to work with McCarter to make the best informed decision as weather conditions present at that time.

It is each parent/guardian's prerogative to choose to keep your child home from school if you should feel the temperature warrants such action. Upon your child's return to school, please issue a written excuse to the building principal's office stating that your child was absent due to the weather. This absence will be considered an "excused" absence. The safety of our students is always our number one priority.

School Delays Due to Cold Weather
In the future, regardless of the decision of the other local school districts, a two-hour delay may or may NOT be issued in the event of cold temperatures. In a review of the past two (2) years, two-hour delays for cold weather indicate a very minimal temperature difference between normal operating hours and the two-hour delay schedule. However, on those days when other districts feel the need to delay, it is the parent/guardian's prerogative to choose to keep your child home from school if you should feel the temperature warrants such action.

Upon your child's return to school, please issue a written excuse to the building principal's office stating that your child was absent due to the weather. This absence will be considered an "excused" absence. McCarters Transportation will work with the district and parents during these particularly cold days. The safety of our students is always our number one priority. Expect your bus to be a few minutes late on very cold mornings. Students may remain in their house or car and upon seeing the bus, leave their warm environment to board the bus. We understand this will extend each stop a few minutes, which will ultimately slow each route. Should your child miss the bus and is unable to attend school on that day please notify the school of the absence, it will be excused. Under all other conditions, please have your children to their bus stop following normal procedures to not delay the route.

BHS Walking Program has begun! Get excercise & keep warm!
BHS will be open Monday – Friday December – March for community members to walk from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.  Walking Program is cancelled on holidays and days that school is not in session.  Walkers should use Entrance #3 and sign clipboard upon arrival.  Sign-in clipboard is located across from room 102. The walking path is identified on the first floor and circles the library.

Managing Grief and Loss

It is very challenging for us all to face the passing of a young person. Any reaction to the death of a peer is normal and your child’s reaction may range from withdrawal to crying or anger. Your child may also ask questions about loss. We have provided resources below that may be helpful for you as you discuss grief.  Please also consider monitoring and discussing your child’s communication (social media, phone, email, text messaging) to help assess their needs. If you feel your child needs support, please contact his or her school’s Guidance Counselor. The Caring Place is also a valuable resource for grief and loss. Their website is: https://www.highmarkcaringplace.com/cp2/index.shtml.

SNACK POLICY for all schools strictly enforced. PLEASE READ!
September 8, 2017

Dear Blackhawk School District Families,

In an effort to protect our students, many of whom have food allergies, we are asking that all snacks brought in for distribution to the students be pre-packaged store bought items. We are also asking that you provide the original packaging, including ingredient list to your classroom teachers. This way, the teachers can address any allergies that are in the classroom and see to it that students with allergies do not receive items that may cause an allergic reaction.

This includes any snacks that are served during the classroom parties as well. All snacks, both those served during the party or sent home must be pre-packaged store bought items.

Also, we ask that no preparation of food items be done as part of the classroom parties. Again, this is an effort to keep all students safe and protected from any possibly food contamination issues or allergic reactions.

Again, this is an effort to keep our children safe. Any questions may be directed to me at (724)846-6600 x1016 or fleischmanc@bsd.k12.pa.us

Sincerely,
Cherie Fleischman
Food Service Director
