Letter to Parents -- Concerns surrounding "13 Reasons Why" Netflix Series
BSD Families:

We are writing to inform you about a book which has recently been turned into a series on Netflix with content surrounding mental health and suicide. This series, called "13 Reasons Why" chronicles the life and suicide of a 17 year old girl who leaves tape recordings for the 13 people who she states were the reason she killed herself.... The series is raising concerns from schools and suicide prevention experts, as we want to ensure that parents and families are aware of the sensitive and mature content if their children are watching or talking about the series. Experts say that “suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth ages 10-24” (Yearous, 2017). If your child is watching this series, we recommend that parents/guardians watch it as well or talk to their children about the content. Being prepared with appropriate and positive messages about mental health can certainly help students struggling with their own emotional well-being or that of their peers.

As always, we are committed to ensuring a positive mental health atmosphere for our students and the district takes any statements of self-harm or suicidal ideation very seriously. If your child is making any statements that are concerning to you, please reach out to your Guidance Counselor, School Psychologist, pediatrician, employees at your local hospital, or UPMC Beaver County Crisis so your child can express his or her feelings to a certified professional. If your child were to make any remarks during the school day or at school activities which we found concerning, we would talk with your child and contact home requesting your child to be seen by a professional to ensure his or her safety.

Conversations surrounding mental health and suicide can be a sensitive topic for parents/guardians to have with their children. If you ever require any assistance, please contact your child’s school so we can offer suggestions and provide you with resources. Additionally, please look over our Student Assistance Program brochure which has some helpful information as well as the contact information for our local county resources. The National Association of School Psychologists share that families and schools should listen to the students without judgement and openly discuss any warning signs that are visible. An appropriate adult raising the issue of suicide with a child/student does not increase the risk, but offers an opportunity to provide support and help to those who need it.

If you would like to read more about student mental health and suicide from the National Association of School Psychologists, please click here.
