Statement Regarding Florida School Shooting
As we continue to learn more about the tragic school shooting in Florida, our hearts go out to the students, families, school staff, and community who have been impacted. In the wake of this tragedy, we want to reinforce that safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. We will continue to reflect on our current crisis protocols to ensure that we have proactive plans in place at all times. One of the most imperative parts of a proactive crisis response plan is communication. We ask you to continue to keep open lines of communication with your children and for your children to be open with a trusted adult in the school setting if they have any concerns about safety. If any of our students need support or need to talk, please let us know. We will all hug our families close tonight while keeping the victims in Florida in our thoughts.

Managing Grief and Loss

It is very challenging for us all to face the passing of a young person. Any reaction to the death of a peer is normal and your child’s reaction may range from withdrawal to crying or anger. Your child may also ask questions about loss. We have provided resources below that may be helpful for you as you discuss grief.  Please also consider monitoring and discussing your child’s communication (social media, phone, email, text messaging) to help assess their needs. If you feel your child needs support, please contact his or her school’s Guidance Counselor. The Caring Place is also a valuable resource for grief and loss. Their website is: https://www.highmarkcaringplace.com/cp2/index.shtml.
